With a title that was so open to interpretation, the latest round of our Instagram competition featured a huge variety of different images, all with one thing in common: movement.
From images featuring sportspeople, cars and animals, to the more creative interpretations using light trails and motion blur, the judges were looking for images that fitted the category, were visually interesting and also technically excellent.
As usual, picking the winner from the thousands of entries was not easy, with many exceptional images on show.
However, Roberto Manfredi’s perfectly executed image from the light trails on board a Tokyo monorail train impressed the judges.
I took this photograph in Tokyo last November,” Manfredi explains, “on a monorail that goes from the centre of the city to the Odaiba district. I had taken some similar shots when I was travelling throughout the day, but these photos didn’t quite have the impact I wanted.
Knowing what he needed to do, and undeterred by the images he had shot during the day, Roberto went back to the monorail that evening, determined to get the shot that he had imagined in his mind.
“I went back at night,” he continues, “and sat in the first carriage in the front row to photograph in the direction of travel of the train. I had no tripod or mount, so I had to place the camera on a shelf just under the window, holding it firmly in place. I kept shooting until I was happy that I had the shot I wanted.”
As the competition winner, Roberto has a new lens to add to his Sony kit: the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master lens.
I currently use an α7RIII and α6600 as the images they capture are excellent, plus they are small and light, which is ideal for when I am travelling. My favourite lens is the new E 16-55mm f/2.8 G lens which immediately became my go-to for its exceptional sharpness and brightness. Of course, I am really looking forward to using the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G-Master lens, especially in low-light situations.
