For many photographers, there comes a point when the standard kit lens that came with their camera begins to feel limiting. I remember feeling exactly the same when I started photography. When Sony asked if I would like to try the lens, I was keen to see how it would perform. The first thing I noticed was just how small and light it felt. Weighing approximately 700g including the lens hood, and measuring around 160mm long, or 220mm with the lenshood fitted was much more compact than I had expected. In the hand, it feels comfortable, balanced and easy to use, making it a lens you can realistically carry for long periods.

That is one of its biggest strengths. In the past, I have bought lenses that were too heavy to carry comfortably. As a result, they often stayed at home, which meant missed opportunities. The FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS offers a much more practical alternative. It gives you the reach and flexibility of a telephoto zoom while remaining small enough to take with you regularly. That makes a huge difference, because the best lens is often the one you actually have with you.

Using a telephoto lens does take some practice, especially if you are not used to working with longer focal lengths. However, because this lens is so light and compact, it encourages you to take it out more often, experiment, and build confidence. A lens like this would have helped me learn much faster in my early years, simply because I would have carried it everywhere rather than leaving it behind.

Being able to keep the lens ready for action also makes it easier to respond quickly to fast-moving or unexpected subjects. A small movement in a tree, a bird suddenly taking flight, or a moment of action across a field can be captured with confidence. I settled into using the lens very quickly and really enjoyed the experience. It is easy to handhold, the autofocus is fast and accurate, and the optical performance impressed me. In the images I captured, I saw no obvious signs of chromatic aberration.

The lens also includes several useful handling features. A Focus Hold button sits close to the zoom ring, allowing you to lock perform other functions if preferred. There is also a lock switch to keep the lens fixed at 100mm during transport, along with AF/MF and stabilisation switches. Everything is positioned logically and is easy to reach while shooting. I also appreciated the focal length markings on the zoom ring at 100, 135, 200, 300 and 400mm, as these correspond to familiar prime lens focal lengths and make composing more intuitive.

If you already own a Sony E-mount camera, whether full-frame or crop-sensor, this lens will work without the need for adapters. I used it with both the Sony Alpha 7 V and the Sony Alpha 6700, and it performed very well on both bodies. On a full-frame camera, the 100-400mm range gives excellent flexibility. The lens is also compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending the reach even further. With the 1.4x teleconverter, the range becomes 140-560mm, while the 2x teleconverter takes it to 200-800mm.

On a crop-sensor camera such as the Alpha 6700, the 1.5x crop factor gives an effective range of 150-600mm. Add the 1.4x teleconverter and that becomes 210-840mm, while the 2x teleconverter extends it to an impressive 300-1200mm. These are extreme focal lengths, especially from such a compact and lightweight lens and camera combination.

The beauty of a compact 100-400mm lens is that it can turn your garden, local park or nearby woodland into your own wildlife adventure. It allows you to photograph animals without getting too close or disturbing them. Whether you are capturing resting insects, birds in flight, or small details in the landscape, the zoom range gives you the freedom to frame subjects tightly, remove distractions and create strong subject separation. The out-of-focus areas are smooth and pleasing, with attractive circular bokeh that gives images a polished, professional look.

Because the lens is so light and easy to handhold, tracking birds between branches or following subjects in motion becomes much more enjoyable. It makes wildlife photography feel accessible and rewarding, even close to home. When you travel further afield, it fits easily into a small bag, making it ideal for walks, holidays and planned shoots.

There is also a real sense of freedom in being able to shoot handheld all day without relying on a tripod or monopod. It allows you to focus entirely on your subject and composition. The built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation helps when shooting at slower shutter speeds, giving added confidence that your images will remain crisp and sharp.

Another advantage of the 100-400mm range is the ability to stand farther back from your subject, making the camera feel less intrusive. This is useful not only for wildlife, but also for family moments, events and candid photography. The lens also surprised me with its close-focusing ability, even at 400mm, allowing me to photograph insects and smaller subjects from just a few steps away.

For hybrid shooters, the same qualities that make this lens enjoyable for stills also make it a strong option for video. Its compact size, image stabilisation, smooth background rendering moving subjects.
