The Power of Compact Creativity

Stefan Krenn

Photography and filmmaking are all about capturing the right moment, the perfect angle, and the best light. But for me, it’s also about efficiency and portability—having a setup that fits my fast-paced workflow without compromising on quality. That’s exactly what I found in the FE 16mm f/1.8 G paired with the Alpha 7C II. This combination is not only professional-grade but also incredibly compact, allowing me to create industry-standard visuals for commercial work and social media too while staying agile on set.

A Wide-Angle Game Changer

When I first got my hands on the FE 16mm f/1.8 G, I was immediately impressed by its ultra-wide perspective and outstanding image quality. Unlike many other wide-angle lenses, it delivers sharp details from edge to edge, even when shot wide open at f/1.8.

What stood out to me the most was how natural and immersive the images felt. There was no exaggerated distortion—just a beautiful, engaging depth that draws the viewer into the frame. The ability to shoot with a 67mm filter thread was also a huge plus, making it easy to use a variable ND filter across different lenses I have in my bag like the FE 35mm f/1.4 GM or the FE 20mm f/1.8 G.

Portability Meets Professionalism

Our compact crew made this shoot even more efficient. With Kerim capturing Behind The Scenes and Franky handling lighting as our Gaffer and Assistant, we could focus entirely on creating the best visuals possible without being weighed down by heavy equipment.

One of the biggest surprises was just how compact and lightweight this setup is. On the day of filming, I had my Alpha 7C II with the FE 16mm f/1.8 G in my winter jacket pocket – yes, an entire professional filmmaking kit that fits in a pocket. This level of portability is a game-changer for content creators, allowing us to stay flexible, spontaneous, and efficient while capturing high-quality footage.

Despite its small size, the f/1.8 aperture gave me outstanding low-light performance. This was crucial for my recent freerunning project, momentum., where I worked closely with Parkour athletes Jan and Mathias.

We shot in an underground urban setting with just one battery-powered light, and thanks to the lens’s light-gathering capabilities, the results were spectacular.

momentum.: The Intersection of Movement and Storytelling

Working with freerunners was an eye-opening experience. Just like in filmmaking, every move is meticulously planned, visualised, and executed with precision. Before attempting a trick, Jan and Mathias would analyse the location, measure distances, assess risks, and only commit once everything was in place. This process mirrored my own approach to videography – planning, experimenting, refining, and finally capturing the perfect shot.

In momentum. I wanted to showcase the energy, speed, and intensity of Parkour, but also highlight the moments of mental preparation and hesitation. This duality – between the rush of movement and the depth of focus – was beautifully supported by the visual strength of the FE 16mm f/1.8 G.

The ultra-wide perspective helped emphasise the athletes’ surroundings, making every environment feel vast and cinematic. Meanwhile, the shallow depth of field at f/1.8 made even wide shots feel immersive and three-dimensional, giving a sense of separation between subject and background, something that’s often difficult to achieve with a wide-angle lens.

Breaking Boundaries with Close Focus

Another feature that truly impressed me was the minimum focusing distance of just 0.15m. This allowed me to create some incredibly intense and perspective-driven shots, placing the camera extremely close to my subject while still maintaining a wide field of view.

This was particularly useful in sequences where I wanted to highlight the physical effort and raw emotion of the athletes. Close-ups of their hands gripping surfaces, feet landing on ledges, or even facial expressions in high-pressure moments – all felt more visceral and dynamic thanks to this near-macro capability.

A Lens That Fuels Creativity

The FE 16mm f/1.8 G isn’t just a tool – it’s a creative enabler. Whether you’re shooting cityscapes, street photography, landscape, astrophotography, or high-energy content creation, this lens delivers results that inspire. It balances technical excellence with practical usability, making it an essential piece of gear for filmmakers and photographers who demand both quality and flexibility.

For me, this lens is more than just optics – it’s an extension of my creative process. And with the Alpha 7C II, it forms a compact powerhouse that lets me tell stories in a way that feels both professional and personal. If you’re looking for a lens that pushes creative boundaries while keeping things light and portable, this might just be the perfect choice.
