Mathieu Le Lay | France

"Filmmaking is my way of exploring nature’s mystery and beauty."

Mathieu Le Lay is a filmmaker and director of photography based in the French Alps. His work is known for its intimate, poetic and visceral approach, creating visually striking films where emotion and storytelling are central. His films have received international recognition, with awards at adventure, mountain and nature film festivals.

Driven by a passion for both the natural world and cinema, Mathieu studied wildlife conservation at the University of Salford in the UK before training at IFFCAM, the French school of wildlife filmmaking. Since 2008, he has been directing documentary films exploring the deep connection between humans and nature, favoring natural light to create immersive and evocative atmospheres.

Working as a director, cinematographer, writer, editor and sometimes producer of his own projects, Mathieu values a cohesive creative vision throughout the filmmaking process. Each film is, above all, a human experience, guided by the desire to convey visual depth and emotional resonance through every story he tells.
