My name is Mike Will and I’m a content creator based in the UK, although I travel a lot abroad for my commercial work. My journey with photography is quite unique. Before venturing into the world of content creation, I had a decade-long career as a professional ice hockey player. The transition from the intensity of sports to the visual arts might seem unlikely, but it's an evolution that truly resonated with me.
When I first picked up a camera in 2016, I was fascinated by the idea of bringing the night to life through photography. I noticed that locations that might seem ordinary during the day can transform into something unique and intriguing at night. Capturing these darker atmospheres allowed me to create images that stand out and evoke a specific mood.
Platforms like Instagram played a significant role in my growth. Since the beginning I've used Sony cameras, starting with Alpha 7 II and as my photography evolved, I progressed through different Alpha cameras. I now use the Alpha 7 IV and Alpha 7R V, and they completely satisfy my needs.
For this test, I took the Sony Alpha 7C II to Iceland to shoot the active volcano and also around London to shoot architecture, street, and night photography.
You were one of the first to test the Alpha 7C II - what were your first impressions and standout features for you?
When I first picked up the camera, the size and weight stood out for me. It is an evolution from the Alpha 7C which is a camera perfect for travel content. For me, the big improvements is the ability to change aperture and shutter speed using the front and back wheels, customised buttons, and the addition of a flip screen with touch menu. The shooting experience is so much closer to a camera like the Alpha 7 IV and goes even beyond in some of the features that are only in my Alpha 7R V like the AI powered autofocus. You can sense that it is a powerful tool while retaining this identity of portability which is exactly what you need as a content creator.
As I explore diverse urban landscapes and capture various moods, I need that flexibility to be able to create content with the highest quality, on the go and even at night. The Alpha 7C II, in essence, is the ultimate tool especially for night time urban photography – you get that professional image quality in a camera that fits into a small bag and can be carried everywhere when roaming a city for good compositions.
How will those features impact/help the type of photography/content creation you and others in the same field do?
The new features make things easier and more versatile for travel and city content. The flip screen is invaluable for shooting in portrait mode, allowing for creative angles but also essential to compose content for social platforms. The front wheel provides quick aperture adjustments, which is essential for my style. You never know when you will find a good scene with a good subject in a city and being reactive is important.
The camera is also very good in terms of low-light capabilities, and this allowed me to capture intricate details and achieve a level of quality that matches what we see in a camera like the Alpha 7 IV. Night photography isn't just about capturing darkness; it's about revealing the stories through intricate details in the composition that come alive when the night is at its darkest.
The Alpha 7C II aims to provide professional and enthusiast photographers the image quality, operability, and autofocus performances they need to carry out their projects. Do you think it achieves this goal?
Absolutely. The addition of the AI processor chip is a significant upgrade from the Alpha 7 IV and has improved the camera's performance. It offers the image quality, operability, and autofocus capabilities needed for demanding projects, especially in low-light conditions, which is crucial for my style of content. Whether you shoot pictures, videos or both, It offers everything professionals and enthusiasts require to capture their vision.
Lenses & accessories are another core component of creating images. Which Sony lenses and accessories did you use for your initial test and why?
During my testing, I used several lenses, including the new FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II and the FE 50mm f/2.5 G. The 16-35mm was great for capturing cityscapes and architecture. I wanted to test the improved optical quality over the previous G Master generation and it is quite a bit more portable too. For the 50mm, I wanted to try how compact you can go as a combo and it is perfect for street photography. It is both very discreet and portable without compromising on image quality. During my travels, I also used the second generation G Master zooms to cover most shooting scenarios. It really works well together and if you go out doing travel content for clients – these are really the only lenses you would ever need. Of course these are professional lenses but you also have similar options in the G range which provides even more portability to the package which I find great in the Sony Alpha system.
What advice would you give content creators who look up to you and your work?
Consistency is key. Practice your craft regularly and enjoy the learning process. Collaborate with others to learn and grow; put yourself in situations that make you try new things and it can help you develop a unique style that resonates with your audience. Don't expect instant success, but with dedication, your work will evolve. Also, embrace new tools and technologies, like the Alpha 7C II, to enhance your creative output.
Any last words?
In the ever-evolving world of photography and videography, stay curious and open to learning. Push your boundaries, explore new techniques, and never stop seeking inspiration. I would recommend anyone to try this amazing new camera as it is really capable of freeing your creativity with it is portability. Sony cameras have always felt like the perfect tools for me. The Sony Alpha 7 series is already quite compact and powerful but with the Alpha 7C II – I feel that even more creators will have an opportunity to create more, be more curious and explore their own vision.
Remember, your unique perspective and dedication can lead to remarkable creative achievements.
